Stanley Clarke - Virtuosity

Stanley Clark“Clear”… then the unmistakable sound of the defibrillator - like an industrial strength staple gun. Anyone who has ever watched ER knows the sound. It’s one you hope you will never have to hear in person.

After only a moment the flat line on the monitor is interrupted by equidistant spikes.

Those spikes represent life restored. A tomorrow has been won for a soul at the portal of death.

The mention of certain names restores life to my soul when I am in danger of flat lining. When I am at risk of becoming complacent or jaded; when my creative flame is reduced to a mere flicker, I revisit mentors and heroes for inspiration and revival.

One such hero is a man named Stanley - Stanley Clarke.

Stanley Clarke is a hero to me because, like another of my heroes, Miles Davis, his name has come to represent more than simply excellence on his principle instrument; it has come to define an era of excellence in artistic expression and technical mastery.

Stanley Clarke is a virtuoso.

Virtuosity has been defined as one who is highly skilled in the technique of an art.

I define virtuosity as Itzak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma, Wynton Marsalis and of course Stanley Clarke.

It is worth noting that virtuosity is not reserved for the arts. In fact, it is more recognizable in the field of athletics.

In athletics there is a level of virtuosity that is attained by only a few that renders their names symbols of excellence in their respective fields; Michael, Serena, Venus, Tiger.

Mention the word bass and ask any respectable musician over the age of 16 what the name Stanley means to them and when they are able to collect themselves and gather a few intelligible words you are likely to hear nothing less than an outpouring of superlatives.

Most of you will know Stanley for his brilliant contributions with Chick Corea and Return to Forever. Some are more familiar with the Clarke/Duke Project with George Duke.

If you are not familiar with either, then you have homework to do. Prepare to  or Bing

To add another personal reference to this framework, I was given an opportunity to share the stage with Stanley at the Majestic Theater this July 20th and to tell you the truth I would have paid the promoter to add me to the bill. That’s how highly I regard this icon.

Now that I’ve mentioned some of his more popular credits with Duke and Corea, I’ll introduce you to some lesser known credits earned by Stanley Clarke the composer/arranger.

Passenger 57, Boyz N the Hood, What’s Love Got to Do With It?, Higher Learning, Poetic Justice, The Five Heartbeats and the hit television series, Soul Food are all credited to this one time prodigy from Philadelphia’s prestigious Academy of Music.

The man has won every possible award a musician can win including Grammys, Emmys and every conceivable reader’s poll - some year after year after year.

But other bassists don’t dismay when he adds yet another award or another year’s reader’s poll, they simply say as do I, “Stanley Clarke is the best there is.”

“Period!”

Melba Moore - Pure Voice

God has blessed a handful of His children with the gift of Pure Voice.

For those of us who have been around longer than one or two reality shows and talent contests, we know that the world of vocalists is populated with two types of singers – those who sing and those who sang – the latter not referring to past tense but one who is capable of demonstrating above average vocal ability and emotional output.

Similarly, one could differentiate the quality of voices.

There is the good voice with tonal qualities which make it pleasant to the ear; then the exceptional voice, which I refer to as the Pure Voice.

I could name a few who I believe possess the gift of Pure Voice but I would without a doubt satisfy some and aggravate others by my omissions – I’ll pass.

Suffice it to say, Pure Voice effectively reminds us that the human vocal apparatus is as much an instrument as any horn or stringed instrument - in fact, it is very much like both.

Pure Voice has tonal attributes or distinctive and unique characteristics and in most cases, range.

Pure Voice is capable of breaking glass or rendering both your forearms ablaze with goose pimples.

My first experience with Pure Voice outside Sunday morning when I wasn’t conscious of what was happening to me, or my arms, was the Broadway production of Ossie Davis’ Purlie Victorious.

Opposite Cleavon Little was a petite, amiable character determined to win the heart of Little’s character Reverend Purlie.

Her character was Luttabelle Gussiemae Jenkins – her name was Melba Moore.

In that three act stage-play I got my first lesson on what real sanging was all about.

Melba Moore’s voice is like a beautiful bird soaring, gliding from note to note, phrase after effortless phrase, ascending and descending as if kept her aloft by billowy waves of air.

It was several decades ago when I first witnessed Melba Moore’s Pure Voice on that Broadway stage but I only have to close my eyes and visualize her singing “I Got Love” and a whole new flock of goose pimples seem to appear on my arms.

Perhaps we’ll get lucky and a savvy TV programmer will think to run the film version of Purlie while Ice Cube’s This Sunday is in the theaters.

Since her Tony Award winning starring role as Lutabelle, Melba has made her mark in the music industry with a discography that spans thirty years.

From the release of Peach Melba in 1975 to I’m Still Here and Nobody But Jesus in 2004 Melba has continued to share and showcase her God given gift of voice and charm.

Google Melba Moore and if you find you’re missing any of her CD titles, you owe it to yourself to get on line and order them right away.

I YouTubed Melba so I could revisit video hits from the 80’s like “Love’s Coming At Ya” and “Falling” and I had as much fun listening as I did recalling shags and shoulder pads.

The wonderful thing about Pure Voice is that it is not trend dependent.

Melba’s voice is just as pure and wonderful today as always.

She’s featured in Fighting Temptations with Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Beyonce and is currently starring in the touring production of Ain’t Misbehavin’.

She is also awaiting the commencement of her new assignment in the highly acclaimed theatrical production, The Color Purple.

I spoke with Melba Moore recently.

I asked her what differences she’s observed in music and in the world since her debut in the Broadway production of Hair in the late sixties.

She said it “used to be a gentler world.”

She uttered the word pornography and when I asked her meaning she said “We’ve crossed the line – its porn.” The music is “taken over by gangsters, sex and titillation.”

She continued; “Music is that powerful that we must be careful how we influence.”

About the world she commented “The devil is mad at good people. Churches are exploding with a greater commercial impact on the world. News reports are filled with child molesting, kidnapping and terrorism – hatred is rampant.”

I asked how she has changed and how she would characterize present day Melba Moore.

She first stated that an “artist must grow – the audience wants growth.”

She went on to say, “you can’t see yourself so I’ve learned to see myself through other people’s eyes.”

She shifted into a higher gear when she proclaimed her deep faith in God.

She spoke of her spiritual life as her “first vocation.”

“Job #1 – pray; job #2 read the Bible.”

“Today I work with people that God sends me, not necessarily the ones I pick.”

“God guides your steps in His daily attempts to grow your life.”

In our thirty minute chat it became quite evident that there is so much more to Melba than Pure Voice.

In addition to adding to your Melba Moore CD collection treat yourself to what is a must have for any true Melba fan, her newest labor of love, the DVD live at Lincoln Center.

Melba is featured in full length performance, with full orchestra and full gospel choir in a once in a lifetime Lincoln Center presentation.

If you don’t own anything by this incredible artist, start your collection with a bang and order the DVD.

If it sounds like this writer is biased and a die hard Melba Moore fan – guilty as charged.

There are only a few pure voices in music history and although she sometimes doesn’t receive the accolades she’s deserving of, Melba Moore is, without a doubt, one of them.

It’s holiday time again!

With a quick flick of the wrist, a lit wooden match flies into a pile of charcoals and woosh - now that’s a fire! Secret family recipes… homemade marinades… a heavenly aromatic cloud flairs your eager nostrils, over-loads your olfactory receptors and puts a big Kool Aid smile of anticipation on your face. While you’re out shopping for your favorite cuts of meat, over-sized pork sausages - Italian or German - every edible part of bovine anatomy and the pride of Perdue, the yard-bird; if your purse will allow, please pay a little more for the good stuff that says things like All Natural or even Organic. Wrap some fresh fish in foil with a little seafood rub and push that on the grill too. Also, don’t forget generous quantities of veggies in the cart… you can grill them too. Anybody for quesadillas? You may need two grills. Fresh green salads, fruit salads, pasta salads, fresh salsa and guacamole – yum – casseroles of every possible variety all make for an attractive table, variety and a plate of food not designed to place you in an early grave. (Google: Food, Inc.) Enjoy yourselves, don’t over-drink (driving or not), laugh a lot, take lots of pictures. Save me a piece of the red velvet! Love you! M

Miles Jaye releases new CD….ATTENERGY

Hit R&B Star, Miles Jaye, storms the jazz scene with the release of his newest CD, Attenergy, an instrumental album featuring the electric violin.

ATTENERGY
Voice on Violin

Attenergy is a compilation of 16 beautifully crafted performances. Each track is a direct reflection of the album title, which Jaye defines as “a combination of attention and energy that generates creativity.” Some highlights on this soon to be classic CD include covers such as “Good Weather,” a tribute to Weather Report; George Benson’s “On Broadway”; and Chick Corea’s “Spain.” Each and every instrument heard on Attenergy is recorded solely by Jaye, which showcases his mastery of the art of songwriting, arranging, performance and production. In describing his passion for creating music Jaye explains, “I’m a singer and a musician yet I think like a painter, where every note is a color and every beat is a brush stroke.” Attenergy is a true reflection of this passion.

Attenergy hits stores nationwide on April 19, 2011 along with featured single, “You Are the Sunshine Of My Life”, an instrumental remake of Stevie Wonder’s classic hit.
